Monika Shergill is Vice President, Content at Netflix India and oversees the development, creation, licensing and acquisition of all Indian language content on Netflix since 2019. As the Content lead of the streaming service in India, Shergill brings two and a half decades of entertainment experience to commissioning and leading Original films, TV, reality series, comedy specials and docu-series across several Indian languages.
Before Netflix, she held several executive positions across global broadcast networks in India. As Executive Vice President at Viacom 18, Shergill helmed the Content launch of the streaming platform of Viacom in 2016. Previously she was the Senior Vice President at the News Corp network, Star India (currently Disney Star India). She led the Programming Strategy and Content teams across several linear channels. At Star India, she led the groundbreaking multilingual Talk Show series ‘Satyamev Jayate’ (Truth Is Eternal). The show won several awards and was written about in Time magazine as one of the most influential and defining social change series globally.
As a former journalist and documentary filmmaker, she started her career reporting for the Green Oscar-winning environment series ‘Living On The Edge’. She travelled the length and breadth of the country, reporting on issues like cotton farmer suicides, poaching, industrial pollution, deforestation and climate change. As a network executive later, Shergill was Programming lead at Sony, Star, Viacom across the years, helming major scripted and unscripted formats and Indian adaptations of global shows like Master Chef, The Ugly Betty, and digital innovations of Big Brother and Fear Factor.
Shergill is a seasoned media professional and frequently speaks at media conferences and events in India. She was recently the Bafta Jury for Bafta Breakthrough India initiative to select the upcoming creative talent in India. She is a graduate of English Honours and a post-graduate in Journalism.
